What Is the Photoshop NextGen Engine?
The NextGen Engine (NGE) is a newly built, GPU-first image engine designed to handle rendering, compositing, and image processing inside Photoshop. It runs through a floating-point HDR pipeline, is built for modern graphics hardware from the ground up, and is meant to support non-destructive filters directly in the layer stack.
The engine is still in active development. Adobe plans a small pre-release for selected customers in the coming months, with a public beta targeted for early 2027.
Why Photoshop Needed a New Foundation
Photoshop 1.0 shipped on a single 800 KB floppy in February 1990, without undo. Since then, the app has moved across processors, gained multithreading, jumped from 32 to 64 bit, and picked up GPU acceleration for the canvas, individual filters, and eventually compositing.

A Merge, Not a Rebuild From Scratch
Adobe is not throwing away 35 years of features and workflows. A full restart would break too many professional pipelines, so the rollout is opt-in.
If you leave the setting off, Photoshop keeps using the current engine and your files behave as they do today. If you turn NextGen on, you keep the same tools, menus, and commands, but the image data routes through the new GPU compositor before it hits the screen.
Making that work means reimplementing layer blend modes, adjustment layers, and layer effects one by one so they match the new pipeline. It is a long compatibility project, not a single switch.
Non-Destructive Filters Without Smart Objects
Filter work is furthest along. Today, a non-destructive Gaussian Blur usually means converting a layer to a Smart Object, opening a modal dialog, and waiting on a small preview.
In an early demo during an Adobe Live session, Howe applied Gaussian Blur as its own layer-like entry in the stack. It could sit anywhere in the order, target a single layer, update live on the canvas, and stay fully editable without Smart Objects or modal dialogs.

Classic filters such as Gaussian Blur and sharpening tools are being reworked for the new pipeline. Adobe is also adding new GPU-native filters like Light Leaks. Existing filters will keep working the old way for now, still destructive or tied to Smart Objects until their replacements ship.
Brushes, Crop, Transform, and AI Are Still on the Roadmap
Beyond filters, Adobe is working on non-destructive painting, including oil and watercolor simulations based on Fresco technology, plus non-destructive cropping and transforming over the longer term. Combining the new engine with AI features is also on the table to close workflow gaps.
Adobe has not set dates for those pieces. Howe treats them as goals that come after the engine foundation is solid enough to build on.
